Paithani is a family heirloom! Worth caring for!

 Identifying real Paithani Saree

The key element of a Paithani is its completely hand-woven border and pallu. Woven between the weft and warp threads, it creates almost mirror image of face design at the reverse side of the Saree. This is the first distinction from machine-made (Power loom) Paithanis, where a mesh of threads in the reverse are visible.

Today, many smart techniques are applied to machine-made versions such as carefully trimming the mesh of threads to give the appearance of real Paithani.

Too much shine, large range of colors in same design, non-natural range of colors is another sign where you should be doubtful.

If you need to test the silk, remove few strands from warp and weft and burn them individually. They all should smell of human hair. This may not give you sense of quality but certainly distinction between natural and synthetic mixture.

While searching for a genuine hand-woven Paithani Saree use your instincts; when you find too precise a symmetry (exact repetition of motif) and very fine details (many colors, smaller motifs and micro details), you can easily surmise that it could be a machine made variant. Join us in our mission of reviving the legacy of hand-woven Paithani Saree. Be a proud owner of a Paithani woven by the traditional weavers who possess and use techniques passed down to them through centuries.

Machine Made Paithani: Note the details and repetition

This mesh of thread is result of Fly Shuttle like embroidery. Machine made versions get rid of it by chopping off and thermally sealing loose ends thus giving similar appearance of hand woven variant.

Preservation of Paithani Saree!

Use Paithani more often. After every use, let it breath for few hours and then wrap in muslin cover. Use few cloves to protect from insects. Use wooden chest to keep your Paithani. Avoid mica or board cabinets as they contain chemicals. Any sign of tear or damage, consult and get it fixed.

More you will use your Paithani, it will last longer. Enjoy it.
